Back Then

My name is Rob Ot. I have been been asked to be your guide through this section because I provide an authentic voice for standard web and digital inclusion.
Back in the 20th century the web was new. Developers needed a way to be able to include people with disabilities in this new world. They looked at a web page and asked, "How can we add accessibility on to this?"
So they looked back when I was recruited to be a part of a special software where I look at what's on a computer and read it aloud to the user. It was called screen reader assistive technology.
People could buy this software, install it, and learn it to use the web. Eventually this became considered best practices for web/digital inclusion for people with visual challenges and still is today. Solutions for people with hearing, mobility and cognitive challenges tended to be, and still are, separate features.
